The FDA is proposing to ban an ingredient that is common in Citrus flavored sodas.
BVO or Brominated vegetable oil is used to keep the citrus flavor throughout the entire drink rather than floating to only the top.
FDA's decision to propose the ban on BVO comes after Japan and Europe have both banned the ingredient, and most recently California banned the ingredient in October.
How could BVO harm our health? BVO can cause nervous system damage, loss of muscle coordination and memory, and have toxic affects on the thyroid gland which produces hormones for blood pressure and heart rate regulation.
A final decision about weather or not to ban BVO has yet to come but CWU will keep you up to date with any decisions about this chemical.
