Philippine officials have come out condemning the actions by China to place a 300 meter barrier at the entrance of the Scarborough Shoal.

The Scarborough Shoal is an area in the South China Sea that’s heavily used by fisherman in the Philippines. The area has been under a cloud of confusion for quite some time, as Chinese officials refuse to acknowledge the Philippines’ claim to the area.
In 2013, the Philippines sought to put an end to the confusion, launching into an Arbitration case that, in the end, confirmed their claim to a 200-nautical mile stretch consuming the area. In the time since, China has entirely refused to acknowledge the decision.
Jay Tarriela, a representative of the Philippines’ coast guard, when speaking about the matter said, “It’s an illegal and illegitimate action coming from the People’s Republic of China… Definitely it affects our food security.”
