Fentanyl Exposure at Daycare Harms Four Children

By Lilyan Beck

Yesterday, news broke that multiple children were injured at a New York City day care due to fentanyl being stored on top of children's play mats.

A one year old boy died from the exposure and three others ranging from 8 months to 2 years of age were hospitalized.

As of right now, the day care operators, Grei Mendez and Carlisto Brito, are facing federal

charges of narcotic possession with the intent to distribute resulting in death as well as conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death.

At the time of the incident, Mendez had called 911 reporting that multiple children at the care center were unresponsive. However, before this, a co-conspirator was called to come retrieve the stash of drugs.

Frank Tarentino, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York Division said, "fentanyl is now in everything and everywhere, killing victims instantly and indiscriminately. It is the most urgent threat in our nation."
