ALBUM OF THE WEEK: THE BRIGHT MISSISSIPPI

October 30, 2017

For those of you looking to spice up mundane life with some southern culture, The Bright Mississippi by is the album for you! perfect for any fall commute, this album is a callback to what Memphis Tennessee sounded like in the glory days of R&B, but with a jazzy twist of instrumental comfort. Being from the great Memphis myself, I feel connected to my roots and heritage through The Bright Mississippi. The album opens up with a sunny strut-and-shuffle style song called Egyptian Fantasy. The fantasy leads into 'A Dear Old Friend' with a solemn tint in the mood. Moving through the album, the music keeps a mundane, moody feeling and yet keeps the energy just enough to get through a day at work or school. Later in the album, the clouds dissipate as 'Just a closer walk with thee' falls in and brings some sunshine through. Near the end, 'Long Long Journey' plays as an ode to the classic R&B style that Allen keeps to. The album ends with 'Solitude', an equally peaceful instrumental piece as the beginning was, but more tranquil. If you're looking for a gateway song to the album, the one for me was 'Blue Drag'; a perfect modern take on 'St. James Infirmary', which it mimics. Blue Drag to me is the bluesiest jazz to ever blues jazz, although I do not have much to compare it to in my personal library. As a stand alone album, The Bright Mississippi is easy to listen to and excellent to lay back with and enjoy for the ride.
