40 Yard Dash Champ?

May 8, 2017

This year at the 2017 NFL Combine, John Ross ran the fastest 40 yard dash time ever recorded at the Combine. Ross ran the 40 yards in an astonishing 4.22 seconds. Ross beat the old record, which was held by Chris Johnson, by 2 hundredths of a second. This obviously, helped Ross rise in the draft to be taken by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round. Yet, is John Ross the 40 yard dash King?

John Ross was so confident after his 40 time he claimed he could run the 40 yard dash faster than the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt. This got one track star and Olympian’s interest in seeing if he could beat John Ross’s record. Christian Coleman, a sprinter who runs for the University of Tennessee, went out to try his own hand at this race. Coleman blew Ross’s time out of the water; and he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.12 seconds.

This led to the Tennessee football coach, Butch Jones, reaching out to Coleman to possibly play on the football team. While this offer might not have been serious, it did not stop Coleman’s track coach from quickly shooting it down. While Christian Coleman might not be stepping on the football field anytime soon, he can run a fast 40 yard dash. Yet, what if I told you one former NFL football player is recorded as running a 40 yard dash just as fast as Coleman during his own Pro day?

Most people would think the football player who ran the fastest 40 yard dash was a speed back or a slot receiver, but they would be wrong. The person who ran a 4.12 second 40 yard dash was none other than the great Vincent Bo Jackson. Yes, that Bo Jackson. Jackson was recorded as running a 4.12 second 40 yard dash at his Pro day. It is said he was even running so fast he ran right out of the indoor facility. This just added to the mystique of the great athlete that Bo Jackson was before his hip injury.

John Ross may have the record at the NFL Combine for the fastest 40 yard dash, but he did not run the fastest 40 yard dash in history. That record is held jointly by Christian Coleman and Bo Jackson. Hopefully, everyone now recognizes who the true Kings of the 40 yard dash.
