Familiar Face, New Title, Wildcats Get a New Coach

April 26, 2017

"I am pumped."

As Randi Richardson walked into 88.1 the Burg this morning to do an exclusive interview, with the biggest smile on her face, she said those three words.

"Pumped" is a perfect word to describe Randi, who is stepping into her first career opportunity as a head coach. If you caught a game last season at any point she had trouble sitting down, even as an assistant. Whether it was a foul, a missed defensive assignment, or a deep game tying three pointer Randi was on her feet.

The recent departure of Jeff Harada left a void in an excited Women's team next season. The question of who would replace him and carry on the success of the 2016-2017 season loomed over the women and the program. This morning hope was restored with screams and cheers from the locker room as players heard Athletic Director Dennis Francois introduce the familiar Richardson as the new head coach.

"The work starts now," Randi said in the interview with 88.1 the Burg. With only a short time left in the Spring before NCAA regulations restrict her interaction on court with her team, Randi is already hard at work. "The biggest learning curve for me is getting used to the administrative aspect of being a head coach." Not only had Harada left, but also once fellow assistant Cassie Klockgether placing the burden for now solely on her shoulders. The mistake would be to discount her capability to handle the pressure. She is a valedictorian, a former starting point guard at University of Wyoming while leading her team to the Sweet 16 of the NIT, and two year assistant on a SPU team which reached the NCAA West Regionals in 2015.

Her philosophy, "compete everyday." Something she is no stranger too. With 14 returners next season, 6 of them being seniors, be ready to watch the Women Wildcat win a lot of games and compete for the GNAC title this year.
