NEWS CENTRAL HEADLINES – MARCH 3 2016

(NBC) April 18th can come too quickly for former Olympic runner Oscar Pistorious. That’s the date a judge can sentence him for the murder of his girlfriend in 2013. Pistorious and his lawyers appealed the conviction which was dismissed by South Africa’s highest court. That appeal stemmed from an overturn of the original manslaughter conviction, declaring him guilty of murder. The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years, although a judge can reduce that sentence for exceptional circumstances. Pistorious is currently under house arrest at his uncle’s mansion.

(CNN) Syria experienced a country-wide power outage Thursday. The country has grown accustomed to this during a five year-long war between rebel and terrorist groups. Many areas are powered by fuel generators, but it is unclear how many people were affected by the outage. Syria’s Ministry of Electricity has not released any details as to what the cause of the outage was. Militants struck part of a power station with rockets, but officials have not linked this to the outage as of now.

(FOX) When Leonardo DiCaprio won his Oscar for Best Actor on February 28th, he gave a rousing speech about climate change and environmental awareness. Leo himself owns multiple million-dollar mansions and apartments with high energy costs. The A-list legend takes frequent flights in his private jet and rents yachts, which burn through over $16,000 of fuel per-day. He is working on building an Eco-friendly resort in Central America and drives Eco-friendly vehicles, often riding a bicycle around New York.
