GLENN FREY

January 19, 2016

“Eagles music was a timeless combination of imagery from the American Southwest and the complicated nature of a woman, any and all women. Glenn Frey, along with Don Henley, wrote some of the most iconoclastic songs of the seventies and eighties. It’s no wonder, they started out as the backing band for Linda Ronstadt and were roomies with Jackson Brown. From those humble connections and an ability to write evocative and catchy songs that jangle and sway, the Eagles became one of the greatest musical acts of the late 20th century. A group that has influence even today. Modern pop, rock and even country music owe a debt of gratitude to the sounds and songs of Glenn Frey. Who hasn’t been entranced at some point by the haunting lyrics of Hotel California, or seen a girl in a flatbed Ford and thought of Winslow, AZ, or felt every word of Desperado in a quiet, lonely moment. The loss of Glenn Frey is a deeper wound than it seems at first glance, the world needs more storytellers and sadly, the early days of 2016 seem to be taking many of the best.”

“It seems like this year more and more of our beloved musicians are ending up in caskets. On January 18th we lost another rock n’ roll music legend. Glenn Frey was the man who took it easy, the mighty desperado and the new kid in town. Frey’s collaboration with Don Henley changed the way we interpret pop music by creating the perfect blend for pop and rock fans. The Eagles were more than a famous rock band from the 1970s. Hotel California, The Eagles’ most critically acclaimed album, was the soundtrack to my childhood and this loss speaks louder to me than any musician who has died this year.”
