(FOX) An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo vanished in the Mediterranean Sea this morning. The plane with 66 passengers fell from the sky in a zig-zag motion and plunged into the water. According to FOX News, aviation officials say terrorism is a likely cause of the crash. Traffic controllers lost contact with the pilot after multiple unanswered radio transmission around 2:29 am. Wreckage has been found, including life jackets and pieces of plastic. No survivors have been identified.
(FOX The Republican-led House of Representatives approved a 602 billion dollar defense bill and denied a bill to close Guantanamo Bay. The approved legislation authorizes military spending on October 1st, which will be used for purchasing weapons and maintaining troops. According to FOX News, the White House issued a 17-page statement saying Obama will veto the bill if it reaches his desk. Guantanamo Bay is a controversial interrogation and torture location Obama promised to remove during his service as president. However, the House did maintain a 2001 bill that allowed President Bush to attack any countries involved in the 9/11 attacks. Obama is using that authority to send U.S. troops into the middle east to fight ISIS.
(NBC) Also on Wednesday, the House passed a bill to fund the fight against the Zika virus. Sponsored by a Kentucky Republican, the bill gives 622 million dollars to the cause. On Tuesday, the Senate passed a compromise bill with 1.1 billion dollars in Zika virus funds. While the final bill is said to be a long ways off, House Speaker Paul Ryan said that Wednesday’s House bill “helps protect our people from the spread of Zika in the most direct way possible.” State and local health departments will be working rapidly this summer to develop treatment and prevention.
