Will Smith, 34, a retired Super Bowl champion with the New Orleans Saints, was gunned down near the city’s famed French Quarter after the suspected shooter Cardell Hayes, 28, rammed his Hummer H2 into the back of Smith’s Mercedes late Saturday night, police said at Sundays press conference.
According to police statements, they are still trying to determine whether the shooting was road rage or if there are ulterior motives to the events that left, Smith was shot nine times in the torso and back. His wife shot twice in the leg.
“Our investigation continues as the motive of this shooting and whether or not Smith and Hayes knew each other prior to this incident,” Police Superintendent, Michael Harrison, said in Sunday’s press conference.
Hayes, the police department’s only suspect was taken in and charged with second-degree murder a charge that carries a life sentence in Louisiana.
