Remember that scene in Mean Girls when Cady Heron gives Regina George those Caltine bars and tells her that they will help her lose weight, when in reality Cady is attempting to ruin Regina’s “perfect body” by giving her bars that will actually make her gain weight at a rapid pace? Pretty bitchy right? If you think Cady sabotaging “the Plastics” was ruthless, in Heathers Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) accidentally murders her best friend after Veronica serves her a cup full of liquid drainer in a revenge scheme gone wrong.

Directed by Michael Lehmann, Heathers revolves around Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), a junior at Westerburg high school and a member of the most powerful clique in school “the Heathers.” First, there is Heather Chandler, (Kim Walker) a tyrannical leader who takes pleasure in the suffering of others. If you think Regina George is mean, Heather Chandler is straight up cruel. Second, there is Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) the shy bookworm of the group, and third there is Heather McNamara (Lisanne Frank) because every popular group needs a cheerleader.

In her quest to break away from her stuck up group of friends, Veronica befriends J.D. (played by a charmingly evil Christian Slater) the mysterious new student whose rebellious nature and overall hatred for the high school environment attracts Veronica, who cannot seem to figure out why she is even friends with “the Heathers” in the first place. “I use my grand IQ to decide what color lip gloss to wear in the morning and how to hit three keggers before curfew” she tells J.D.

In their attempts to teach some popular kids a lesson, Veronica and J.D. plot some brutal pranks which result in more murders of some of their most popular classmates. “I’ll have to send my S.A.T. scores to San Quentin instead of Stanford” Veronica exclaims. Of course, while Veronica sees these murders as unfortunate accidents, J.D. may have his own agenda. To cover their tracks, Veronica and J.D decide to stage the murders as suicides. Conveniently, Veronica has a knack for forging people’s handwriting, which makes writing suicide notes a breeze.

Besides being an overall fresh and fun dark comedy, Heathers is also a critique of peer pressure in high school and how society’s exploitation of tragic events often romanticized issues such as suicide. After Heather Chandler’s death, suicide even becomes trendy for many students at Westerburg high school.

The film also features some awesome 80s on liners especially from Kim Walker who plays head mean girl Heather Chandler. Some of her memorable one liners include “F**ck me gently with a chainsaw, do I look like Mother Teresa?” and “Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?” Ironically and unfortunately, Walker died of brain tumor in 2001.

Whether due to the film’s dark context, foul language or the fact that the film is about the controversial subject of teenage suicide, the cult film, which was released on March 31, 1989 in the US only grossed 1.1 million in theaters. Despite the film’s lack of success in the box office, Entertainment Weekly ranked Heathers #5 on their list of 50 Best High School Movies, and the critically acclaimed film holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although there have been countless rumors of a sequel and a possible TV show based on the film there are still no plans for sequels as of now. That being said, Fox’s satirical comedy Scream Queens, which centers around three murderous sorority sisters who call themselves The Chanel’s, seems to borrow elements from Heathers. The film was also adapted into a stage musical in 2010.

If you haven’t seen this awesome 80s high school flick, what’s your damage? This dark comedy is “so very.”
