Tacoma Washington has always had their music scene, but over the last five to six years the Tacoma hip-Hop scene has been bubbling on the verge notoriety, getting attention from such publications as Vice and Pitchfork.
The Tacoma sound is a mixture of 90s Gangsta Rap mixed with the shock and the experimental-ism of artists like Tyler the Creator and Run The Jewels. The scene has produced original and special artists such as The Breaklites, ILLFIGHTYOU, :30, The Sandlot Collective, and the artist I’ll be talking about PEASNTBOYS.
PEASNTBOYS, or Formally Known as Jai X Jrm are twins from Tacoma who have been working on their career for quite some time. In fact, they released their self-titled mix-tape three years ago at the age of nineteen.
Since then they’ve released a handful of songs via their SoundCloud account, each one progressively morphing the PEASNTBOYS sound from the Drake and Big Sean influenced style of rap to their newer sound. The few songs they have released in support of their upcoming project have had more experimental beats and the lyrical content is very unique to both Tacoma and the PEASNTBOYS.
There has been no album or mixtape name released, however their single “HEADBANG” has had eighteen thousand plus plays along with some great 90s kids album artwork. Anyone who wants to listen to original, new, and fresh independent rap should check out PEASNTBOYS and the entire Tacoma Hip-Hop scene.
