It’s not everyday that you come by an artist who works as hard as Ty Segall. The multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter, and record producer is no stranger to releasing records back to back. Segall has had a stream of releases, collaborations, singles, and more appearing every year since his debut cassette release in 2008. Since starting his solo career, he has released eight studio alums alongside various EP’s and singles.
Segall’s music combines different genres such as garage rock, punk rock, psychedelic rock, noise rock, and glam rock as well as heavy metal and classic rock. His early music was heavily inspired by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Black Sabbath, but overtime his music has gotten mellower taking cues from Neil Young, The Beatles and Grateful Dead.
To give a better sense of Segall’s diligent music streak, he released his second record “II” with Fuzz, a band he formed with Charles Moothart in 2012, in November 2015 as well as releasing a collection of cover songs on Goner Records. Alongside these releases and spending the majority of 2015 touring, Segall still managed to find time to announce the release of his next studio record Emotional Mugger in a way that is as unconventional and classic as the artist himself.
Instead of formal publicity, Segall decided to take advantage of the era of social media exposure and surprise releases by taking his own approach. He announced the new studio album by sending VHS tapes to multiple publications and subsequently creating a website www.emotionalmugger.com , that features multiple shorts videos of Segall explaining the concept of the album as well as playing a live version of a song from the new album. He also offered a hotline number for fans to call as well. The number features some interesting looped messages from Segall in the tone of voice that can be compared to a psychological thriller.
Emotional Mugger will be released January 22.
