Shows of Note – Infected by Music

Infected+Mushroom+IM

Infected Mushroom is in a league of their own. The Israeli music duo creates music described as psytrance, psychedelic and dance.  The group is known for their consistent sound evolution and are a huge cult favorite in the Middle East. The band’s live shows feature guitars, live drums, vocals and usually a multi-media backdrop.

Infected Mushroom

Infected Mushroom

Together since 1998, Erez Aizen and Amit Duvdevani  released their first album as Infected Mushroom in 1991. The album titled The Gathering, included one of their more popular songs “Release Me.” Infected mushroom’s most recent album is titled Army of Mushrooms. Some claim that the duo sold out their psy-trance soul to dubstep but critics like Consequence of Sound’s Alex Young disagree.  Young said this about the album:

“Granted, two tracks on their newest LP, Army of Mushrooms, feature the downtempo beats and signature womp-womp bass sounds that immediately suggest EDM’s red-headed stepchild of a genre. Yet Infected Mushroom, the Israeli-born duo of Amit “Duvdev” Duvdevani and Erez Aisen, infuse their dubstep experiments with plenty of psychedelic touches and unexpected twists.”

Since their most recent LP, Infected Mushroom has released the single “See Me Now,” “Never Mind,” and two EPs, Friends on Mushrooms, Vol. 1 and 2.

Infected Mushroom will be performing in Wash. April 11 at The Showbox. The ‘Burg will be giving away a pair of tickets to see the electronic duo via our social media. Keep an eye out on Facebook and Twitter for a chance to win!

Shows of Note – Get Lucky

20130304-081800-749651

Ravers all over the Pacific Northwest are hoping to get lucky this year. The annual USC Events festival (Lucky 2014) will take place on Friday, March 14th this year, at the WaMu Theater in Seattle. This event has quickly become one of the biggest “must-attend” events for any EDM fan.

Diplo

Diplo

USC Events has reputation for putting on shows that don’t disappoint both in music and show production. Thousands will gather for Lucky to experience the trapeze artists, epic light shows and elaborate St. Patrick’s Day themed costumes that will accompany the EDM line-up.

Some of the Lucky lineup highlights include Diplo, Kill the Noise and Showtek. Diplo has excited many EDM fans and has garnered quite the following in the hip-hop scene as well. Be warned, a lot of twerking will ensue once Diplo takes the stage. Diplo, or the formally known Wesley Pentz has been on the scene since 2003 with Epistomology. 2012’s “Express Yourself” caught the attention of well…everybody. Since then Diplo has produced the Revolution (Remixes) EP in which the artwork is a fist made up of half-naked twerking women.

Kill the Noise

Kill the Noise

Kill the Noise also highlights the Lucky bill. The one man band made of Jake Stanczak specializes in drum and bass, dubstep and house.  Always sporting his baseball cap and skull emblazed bandana, the young producer gained a huge fan base before he even produced his first solo release, the Roots EP in 2010. Since 2010 he has produced Kill Kill Kill, a Roots Remixed EP, Black Magic and Black Magic Remixes.

Showtek

Showtek

Brothers, Wouter and Sjoerd Janssen, the two members of Showtek are sure to delight hardstyle and progressive fans alike at this year’s Lucky. Though their roots are in hardstyle they are slowly exploring the progressive side of EDM. With an alarmingly quick rise to fame, they’ve performed with David Guetta, Tiesto and Steve Aoki, along with other powerful EDM artists and are truly at the top of the electronic music scene. Check out their collaboration with Justin Prime, “Cannonball (Earthquake)” featuring Matthew Koma which was just released two days ago on iTunes.

The ‘Burg is giving away two pairs of Lucky 2014 tickets this Friday (3/7). Listen between 8 and 10 p.m. and again between 10 and midnight for a chance to get Lucky this March.

Shows of Note – Darkstep

Excision+big

Excision is an artist we talk about quite frequently. Ever popular with the college crowd, Excision has returned to Washington again and again, pleasing fans every time. Excision takes dubstep and makes it dark, grimey and dangerous.

Excision

Excision

It’s been a while since Excision has produced a new album. X Rated was released in 2011 and he has yet to follow it up with an album or EP though there have been a handful of singles including “Headbanga”, “Brutal”, “Raise Your Fist” and “Vindicate” to name a few. Many of Excision’s most recent singles are in collaboration with other artists like Datsik and Space Laces.

Constantly on tour, Excision has listed The Gorge right here in Washington as one of his favorite venues.  Dropping out of school isn’t advice most people would give, but Excision’s decision to drop out of his business degree program ultimately paid off.

Excision is playing in the northwest January 22 at The Knitting Factory in Spokane, January 23 at The Roseland Theater in Portland and January 24 at The Paramount Theater in Seattle.  We’re giving away tickets to the Spokane show tonight between 8 and 10 p.m. and 10 and midnight. Tune-in for a chance to win!

Shows of Note – Resolution Locals

DJ-Beauflexx-KusH.-

With the EDM music genre growing at alarming rates, both in number of producers/DJs and fans, it’s easy to get lost in a crowd and can be hard to break into the business as an aspiring EDM musician. That’s why we appreciate the fact that USC Events features local artists in many of their lineups. Washingtonian Beauflexx, will be at Resolution 2014 this year and we’re stoked about it.

Beauflexx

Beauflexx

Originally from Seattle, Beauflexx is now a Spokane resident and started playing shows at the age of 17. Specializing in moombahton, dubstep and trap, the DJ draws inspiration from Diplo, Bro Safari and Borgore. His music described as “eargasmic bass,” Beauflexx also pulls from his 80’s childhood and the break beats, hip hop and funk that came from that era.

Now a seasoned DJ with over a decade of live performances in the northwest, Beauflexx has earned awards in Spokane as best DJ for multiple years. Beauflexx has worked alongside USC Events on multiple projects but is usually found at The Knitting Factory in Spokane.

If you’re planning on attending Resolution this year, be sure to take note of the local talent. Win tickets by entering into our live on-air drawing on December 20. Check out our blog and Facebook events page for details on how to win tickets to the biggest New Year’s Party in Washington state.

Shows of Note – Our Resolution

8386345399_0aeb952d2d_b

Some people want to lose weight, some people want to break a bad habit and others just want to get plurnt. USC Events is making the latter resolution easy with Resolution 2014.  A lineup of over 15 artists, the EDM extravaganza looks to continue its tradition of being the biggest party in Washington state this New Year’s.

Everyone is obviously stoked for headliners Knife Party and Above & Beyond, but there are a few other artists on the playbill The ‘Burg is particularly excited about.

Figure

Figure

Figure is the poster child for making your way through the ranks of EDM. Making a name for himself in the American dream fashion, Figure, aka Josh Gard, is originally from a small town in Indiana and has gradually gone from traditional DJ techniques of scratching vinyl to dubstep production.  When asked in an interview with SimplyGigantic.com if he thinks DJs make better producers he had to admit that if you do one it will help with the other, and we agree.

Lazy Rich

Lazy Rich

Electrohouse DJ, Lazy Rich (Richard Billis), is a Canadian import who has caught our attention. Influenced by Wolfgang Gartner, Deadmau5 and Zero 7, the man claims to have a hankering for evil sounding music as opposed to the bright and fluffy.  His career on the rise, Lazy Rich has worked with Deadmau5, Lady GaGa, Fatboy Slim and many more on remixes and other projects. Lazy Rich isn’t stopping anytime soon and we’re glad he isn’t.

NERVO

NERVO

It isn’t common to see female producers in the EDM scene. It’s even less common to see twins. NERVO is truly a breath of fresh air. Talented, sexy and blonde, they may just be on their way to becoming EDM icons. Originally songwriters for stars like Ke$ha and the Pussycat Dolls, twins Mim and Liv co-wrote “When Love Takes Over” by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. The Australian born NERVO twins are now COVERGIRLS and have had quite the year in 2013. It will be hard to top their success in 2014 but Resolution will be a great way to start trying.

The ‘Burg is giving away multiple pairs of tickets to Resolution 2014. Listen between 10 and midnight tomorrow (12/6) for a shot at winning. Check out our Resolution Ticket Giveaway Blog and Facebook event for details on how you can be entered into a Resolution ticket drawing.

Shows of Note – EDM in the 3D

morgan_page_jpg_627x325_crop_upscale_q85

The Morgan Page Presents tour is be the biggest tour the two-time Emmy nominee Morgan Page has ever headlined. With tour stops throughout the United States as well as overseas in countries such as Australia and India, Morgan Page is an example of the power and success that comes with being a seasoned DJ with a large number of devoted fans.

Morgan Page

Morgan Page

It’s hard to believe that Morgan Page comes from a rural background, having grown up in a log cabin in Vermont. Obsessed with EDM from an early age, Page started producing at the age of 14. Page’s most recent full length album, In the Air which dropped April 3, 2012 was enormously successful and the DJ also had a spot on the Paradiso bill last June.

A review of the In the Air album by DancingAstronaut.com said this:

“- on In The Air he sticks to the moving progressive house he knows best. His continued growth and considerable talents remind us of another California dweller and Dancing Astronaut favorite, Kaskade. We predict that In The Air will bring Page the same kind of success that Kaskade saw with Dynasty. It’s an easy comparison to make: both producers excel in making music that truly means something.”

The Morgan Page Presents Tour is a 3D tour and pushes the EDM production limits by being the first DJ tour with full high resolution 3D visuals. Smaller venues aren’t always compatible with the light show but even without the ability to be truly 3D, Page always tries to ensure fans experience something new with each of his live performances.

The ‘Burg will be giving away four pairs of tickets to various Morgan Page show locations. The giveaways start tonight (11/01) between 8 and 10 so be sure to tune-in for a chance to see Morgan Page perform live. The Morgan Page Presents tour will be in Seattle at Showbox SoDo on November 15 and the Knitting Factory in Spokane on November 16.

Shows of Note – Uprising in Seattle

Alesso+Years

The EDM culture is one that embraces craziness. Whether in the form of costumes, lighting, or over-the-top stage props, the motto seems to be the wilder the better. The Uprising North America Tour featuring Alesso is headed to Seattle on November 11th and he promises to bring the type of music one can “feel in their bones.”

Alesso or Alessandro Lindbald as he was born, is a DJ out of Sweden and really didn’t gain his current level of fame until 2011 when his remix of “Pressure” became an EDM standard. A DJ who’s productions usually fit in the house category, Alesso is similar to Sebastian Ingrosso, Dirty South or Nicky Romero.

Alesso

Alesso

A fan favorite, Alesso can’t praise his fans enough and even let one pant his chest before a live set. In an interview with The Independent Blogs Alesso said:

“I’m still pretty young, so everything that’s happening at the moment is still kind of shocking for me! I’m just starting to get used to this so-called ‘lifestyle’ that represents many first-time experiences for me, quite a lot of unexpected moments, I even feel sometimes like pinching myself to check ‘Is this real?’ It’s amazing to be offered the opportunity to do these wonderful things at my age. Luckily my dreams have been fulfilled very quickly, and I’m more than happy about that but beyond the excitement, sometimes you do need to sit down and take the time to realize what’s going on.”

Thanks to our awesome partnership with USC Events, 88.1 The ‘Burg will  be giving away two pairs of tickets to the Seattle show tonight (10/25) between 6 and 10 p.m. Tune-in to win!

Shows of Note – An Electric Monster Mash

8135899261_42e3b929a8_b

EDM fans in the Pacifc Northwest have been a-buzz with excitement over USC Events’s annual Halloween themed show, Freaknight 2013. Freaknight has become a staple in the Pacific Northwest EDM culture and is headlined by some pretty big names including Benny Benassi, Calvin Harris and Baauer. The whole lineup is excellent, but below are our three picks, for DJs you don’t want to miss out on this year.

Metrik, (no, not the female fronted Canadian indie band) aka Tom Mundell is a London based producer who specializes in the sort or liquid-funk drum and bass that makes you stop what you’re doing and jump up and down.

Metrik

Metrik

Signed to Hospital Records in 2012, Metrik has been pushing EDM into listening arenas one would never expect. Metrik’s track “Technicolour” was used as a sound bed for Barack Obama’s victory speech on Radio One.

Metrik’s most recent works are found on his self-titled EP released in April of this year. The EP was praised for balancing aggressive bass lines with soft melodies. It appears Metrik is only getting bigger and better while fans eagerly await a full-length album under the Hospital Records label.

Delta Heavy is our second Freaknight pick and the duo is also out of London, made up of DJs Ben Hall and Simon James. The two formed Delta Heavy in the hopes of avoiding the cubicle grind and white collar lifestyle. The gamble certainly paid off for the pair as they continue to garner respect and loyal fans all around the world.

Delta Heavy

Delta Heavy

An article by Music.com cited Hall as saying that he and group-mate James feel as though bass music had degenerated into something “quite noisy and really quite loud and in-your-face.” Hall went on to state that Delta Heavy is “moving towards something a bit more musical.” While the trend of EDM may be headed in that “noisy sounds” direction, we are happy to say that Delta Heavy doesn’t mind taking the road less traveled.

On their own website, Destroid states the following:

“Bringing forth the next stage of the electronic movement, Destroid is the new mega collaboration led by Canadian bass master Excision featuring Downlink and KJ Sawka. A full-on live dubstep band executed in a way bass music has never seen, Destroid are ready to obliterate all that stand in their way.”

Destroid

Destroid

The dark EDM group combines the forces of dubstep/electro producers Excision and Downlink as well as ex- Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka, united as a full-on live dubstep band. The group can be a little intimidating to those who are not veterans of the EDM scene. Intense, loud and explosive, Destroid has the ability to awake you from a nightmare or haunt your dreams.

Feaknight has expanded to a two-day festival this year, which will be held at  WaMu Theater in Seattle, October 25 and 26. The ‘Burg will be giving away not one, but two pairs of tickets tonight (10/18) between 8 and midnight. Remember, you must tune-in to win so switch the dial to 88.1 The ‘Burg tonight for the opportunity to attend one of the most coveted EDM shows in the Pacific Northwest.

Shows of Note – Not Dead Yet

Zeds Dead

Electronic Dance Music is no longer a genre that is passed off as something a small group of weird kids like. The genre has seeped into almost every form of music from rock to country. EDM DJ’s are now mainstream and the average college student can probably name at least one EDM DJ whether David Guetta, Calvin Harris or some other artist that has “featured” popular pop singers or rappers in their music.

The Hot Sauce EP

The Hot Sauce EP

Zeds Dead is one of many EDM artists slowly creeping its way into mainstream status. Now a regular on the USC playbill, the duo formed in 2009 and are from Toronto, Canada. The group is made of DC and Hooks and specializes in grimey dubstep and house music. In their own words, Zeds Dead “balances on the line that separates chill listening music and dance floor.”

January of this year the duo released an EP titled Hot Sauce, named after a scene in “Pulp Fiction.” The EP showcases Zeds Dead range, merging drum & bass, tribal and glitch. The opening track on the five song EP features spooky noises, starts off slow and builds into the next song preparing the listener for the sirens, cymbals and hip-hop vocals on the rest of the EP.

After asked about their influences in an interview with Earmilk.com the duo said this:

There’s no formula really. I [we] usually just mess around until I stumble upon something I like. Sometimes an idea just pops into my head and I rush to jot it down very simply and then elaborate on it later. I listen to a lot of music so it naturally influences my music in one way or another.

Zeds Dead is performing with openers Paper Diamond, DJ Green Lantern and Branchez at Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Saturday, October 19. Tune-in tonight (10/11) between 8 and 10 and 10 and midnight for a chance to win tickets!
