Shows of Note -The Singing Sidekicks

Garfunkel+and+Oates+135840a

Garfunkel and Oates is a duo made up of two of the most bad-ass women in comedy and music. The funny team made up of singer/actresses Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel) and Kate Micucci (Oates) writes and performs some of the dirtiest, cutest, catchiest indie music around.

Garfunkel and Oates

Garfunkel and Oates

Men usually dominate the musical-comedy scene with individuals such as Bo Burnham and Stephen Lynch or groups such as The Axis of Awesome setting the bar. Garfunkel and Oates changed that when they formed in 2007. The duo has been described as the “Female Flight of the Conchords” by the Wall Street Journal. Named after the sidekicks in Simon and Garfunkel and Hall and Oates, not only is Garfunkel and Oates probably the funniest female musical-comedy group in the business, they might be the only.

Riki Lindhome has acted in movies such as “Million Dollar Baby” while you might recognize Kate Micucci from her reoccurring role on “Scrubs” as Lawyer Ted’s love interest. Their most recent album, Slippery When Moist feature songs we love such as “Handjob, Blowjob, I Don’t Understand Job” and “My Apartment’s Very Clean Without You.”

The hilarious duo will be performing at The Neptune Theatre in Seattle on November 1st and The ‘Burg has all the hookups. Tune-in to Geek Speak tomorrow (10/25) between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m for a chance to win tickets to the Seattle show. We will also give a pair away Monday (10/28) between 3 and 6 p.m. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see this pretty, witty group!

Shows of Note – An Electric Monster Mash

8135899261_42e3b929a8_b

EDM fans in the Pacifc Northwest have been a-buzz with excitement over USC Events’s annual Halloween themed show, Freaknight 2013. Freaknight has become a staple in the Pacific Northwest EDM culture and is headlined by some pretty big names including Benny Benassi, Calvin Harris and Baauer. The whole lineup is excellent, but below are our three picks, for DJs you don’t want to miss out on this year.

Metrik, (no, not the female fronted Canadian indie band) aka Tom Mundell is a London based producer who specializes in the sort or liquid-funk drum and bass that makes you stop what you’re doing and jump up and down.

Metrik

Metrik

Signed to Hospital Records in 2012, Metrik has been pushing EDM into listening arenas one would never expect. Metrik’s track “Technicolour” was used as a sound bed for Barack Obama’s victory speech on Radio One.

Metrik’s most recent works are found on his self-titled EP released in April of this year. The EP was praised for balancing aggressive bass lines with soft melodies. It appears Metrik is only getting bigger and better while fans eagerly await a full-length album under the Hospital Records label.

Delta Heavy is our second Freaknight pick and the duo is also out of London, made up of DJs Ben Hall and Simon James. The two formed Delta Heavy in the hopes of avoiding the cubicle grind and white collar lifestyle. The gamble certainly paid off for the pair as they continue to garner respect and loyal fans all around the world.

Delta Heavy

Delta Heavy

An article by Music.com cited Hall as saying that he and group-mate James feel as though bass music had degenerated into something “quite noisy and really quite loud and in-your-face.” Hall went on to state that Delta Heavy is “moving towards something a bit more musical.” While the trend of EDM may be headed in that “noisy sounds” direction, we are happy to say that Delta Heavy doesn’t mind taking the road less traveled.

On their own website, Destroid states the following:

“Bringing forth the next stage of the electronic movement, Destroid is the new mega collaboration led by Canadian bass master Excision featuring Downlink and KJ Sawka. A full-on live dubstep band executed in a way bass music has never seen, Destroid are ready to obliterate all that stand in their way.”

Destroid

Destroid

The dark EDM group combines the forces of dubstep/electro producers Excision and Downlink as well as ex- Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka, united as a full-on live dubstep band. The group can be a little intimidating to those who are not veterans of the EDM scene. Intense, loud and explosive, Destroid has the ability to awake you from a nightmare or haunt your dreams.

Feaknight has expanded to a two-day festival this year, which will be held at  WaMu Theater in Seattle, October 25 and 26. The ‘Burg will be giving away not one, but two pairs of tickets tonight (10/18) between 8 and midnight. Remember, you must tune-in to win so switch the dial to 88.1 The ‘Burg tonight for the opportunity to attend one of the most coveted EDM shows in the Pacific Northwest.

Shows of Note – Chill-out Trip-Hop

bonobo

Bonobo has been electrifying the ears of his listeners since 2000, when he released his first album, Animal Magic – and his music is indeed magical.  Since then, he has continued to fuse electronic music with hints of jazz and unique rhythms.  Bonobo is a true wizard of sound.

Over the past few years, Bonobo has been touring around the globe with his live band, hooking audiences with his catchy rhythms and creative melodies.  2012 was a year in which Bonobo also found success as a DJ. The artist traveled to New York to write material for his next album, a true piece of electronic music excellence.

Bonobo

Bonobo

The North Borders, Bonobo’s latest work, plays like a soundtrack to a fantastic dream.  After pressing play, listeners will be transported into the sonic bliss of Bonobo’s creativity.  The album’s resonance will be felt long after the final track has ended.  The aura of tracks like “First Fires”, “Cirrus”, and “Ten Tigers” are habit-forming works of art.

The balanced complexity of Bonobo’s music stems from his skill of piecing together separate ideas.  As he told Berkleegroove.com in April of this year:

It’s interesting how you get these sounds, which are three-times removed from each other, but when you listen to the track you think, ‘WOW, this sounds great!’”

You can keep up with Bonobo’s latest news, tour dates, and more on his website, bonobomusic.com.  He will be making stops at Seattle’s Showbox at the Market on October 24 and Portland’s Roseland Theater on October 25.  Listen to 88.1 The ‘Burg tonight (10/18) between 6 and 8 p.m. for a chance to win tickets to the Seattle show!

Shows of Note – Hoodie Mob of America

Hoodie+Allen+Hoddie+Allenpng

If Hoodie Allen proves one thing, it’s that you can be successful in the rap game as a clean cut, Caucasian with a quick tongue. Based out of New York, Hoodie has impressed critics with his witty lyrics and hustle. It doesn’t hurt that Hoodie could teach a class on how to properly sample songs. The wordsmith has made a name for himself sampling music from unconventional sources. Allen is one of the ideals in alternative hip-hop and chances are, we’ll remember the name.

A self-described college educated music nerd, Hoodie released his first EP, All American in 2012 and released his most recent mix tape Crew Cuts in February of this year. Word is the rapper is hoping to release his first full length album this fall.

Hoodie Allen

Hoodie Allen

Comparable to Macklemore, Hoodie has cited the Seattle based rapper as an inspiration in his own career. In an interview with Fuse, Hoodie said this:

Really he’s one of the reasons why I like, continue to champion my indie effort–he’s broken through that ceiling of, like, there’s a limit to it-there’s no limit”

Hoodie also noted that he and Macklmore have “always planned to do a song together,” and hinted that his next album or EP would include Macklemore, exciting news for those who have a love for the alternative-rap scene.

Already a Hoodie fan? Become a Hoodie mob member and receive exclusive benefits such as meet and greets with Hoodie himself by signing up on his website.

As part of his “Party With Your Friends Tour,” Hoodie Allen will be performing in the northwest on October 31 at Showbox SoDo in Seattle and November 1 at Wow Hall in Eugene, Oregon.

Shows of Note – Walk Me to the Moon

Walk+the+Moon+PNG

It’s hard to find indie pop/rock more delicious than Walk the Moon. Out of Cincinatti, Ohio, the group formed in 2008. They exploded into the indie scene with their hit single “Anna Sun” and their debut self-titled album peaked at number eight on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart.

Walk the Moon

Walk the Moon

Riding their early success, Walk the Moon released their EP titled Tightrope in January of this year.  A review on Alternativeaddiction.com said this about the Tightrope EP:

“It’s different from the album—it’s not as polished—but it’s worth the same amount of attention.”

And attention is what the band is getting.  Walk the Moon has already been featured as Nylon Magazine’s Band Crush, as a Hot New Band by SPIN Magazine, as a New York Post band “You Must Know,” and in the Spotlight of “Last Call with Carson Daly.” In the midst of their fall tour, the band appears to keep fan satisfaction as their focus. In an interview with Elle Magazine, Eli Maiman, the band’s guitarist said this of the fall tour:

“We love meeting our fans and seeing their smiling faces sing along. We’re also really looking forward to debuting some of the new material at the shows. We’re doing our biggest, most colorful shows to date.”

Walk the Moon will be performing in the northwest on October 21st at the Roseland Theatre in Portland, October 23rd at Showbox SoDo in Seattle, and October 24th at the Knitting Factory in Boise.

Shows of Note – Not Dead Yet

Zeds Dead

Electronic Dance Music is no longer a genre that is passed off as something a small group of weird kids like. The genre has seeped into almost every form of music from rock to country. EDM DJ’s are now mainstream and the average college student can probably name at least one EDM DJ whether David Guetta, Calvin Harris or some other artist that has “featured” popular pop singers or rappers in their music.

The Hot Sauce EP

The Hot Sauce EP

Zeds Dead is one of many EDM artists slowly creeping its way into mainstream status. Now a regular on the USC playbill, the duo formed in 2009 and are from Toronto, Canada. The group is made of DC and Hooks and specializes in grimey dubstep and house music. In their own words, Zeds Dead “balances on the line that separates chill listening music and dance floor.”

January of this year the duo released an EP titled Hot Sauce, named after a scene in “Pulp Fiction.” The EP showcases Zeds Dead range, merging drum & bass, tribal and glitch. The opening track on the five song EP features spooky noises, starts off slow and builds into the next song preparing the listener for the sirens, cymbals and hip-hop vocals on the rest of the EP.

After asked about their influences in an interview with Earmilk.com the duo said this:

There’s no formula really. I [we] usually just mess around until I stumble upon something I like. Sometimes an idea just pops into my head and I rush to jot it down very simply and then elaborate on it later. I listen to a lot of music so it naturally influences my music in one way or another.

Zeds Dead is performing with openers Paper Diamond, DJ Green Lantern and Branchez at Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Saturday, October 19. Tune-in tonight (10/11) between 8 and 10 and 10 and midnight for a chance to win tickets!

Do it Obscura

Camera+Obscura+obscura

Female fronted indie pop has never been as sweet as Camera Obscura. The Scotland based band has been around since 1996 and although they have gone through changes in regards to membership, the band has remained a favorite for hipsters all around.

Camera+Obscura+obscura

Although they started out as three piece band, Camera Obscura now has five members. Tracyanne Campbell (vocals, guitar), Kenny McKeeve (guitar), Carey Lander (keyboards), Gavin Dunbar (bass) and Lee Thomson (drums). The band will release their first album since 2009’s My Maudlin Career on June 3rd of this year. The album name is Desire Lines and will feature the pre-released single “Do It Again.”

That’s So Punk Rock

Alkaline+Trio+ALK3

What people often don’t realize about 88.1 The ‘Burg is that we aren’t just alternative or Top 40. We love us some punk rock as well. That’s why we’re pumped to be giving away tickets to veteran band, Alkaline Trio.

Alkaline+Trio+ALK3

The trio formed in late 1996 and consists of Matt Skiba on guitar and vocals, Dan Adriano on bass and Derek Grant on the drums. Known for their catchy hooks, upbeat tempo and darker lyrics, usually about drugs, depression and alcohol, Alkaline Trio’s most recent album took a slight step outside their norm.

My Shame is True dropped March 29 and is supposedly about Skiba’s recent breakup. His girlfriend even appears on the cover of the album. The album is receiving mixed review with Sputnik Music saying:

“On My Shame Is True he (Skiba) sounds much more open and vulnerable than on previous efforts which allows these well-worn themes to sound fresh and new.”

The rating gave the album 3.5 stars out 5 and overall, thought the album better than previous efforts by the band. Amplified Magazine had more to say in their review of the album:

“All in all, this album won’t please everyone. Fans of the band’s early work will find very little on this album that is reminiscent of either Goddamnit! or Maybe I’ll Catch Fire, but that doesn’t mean this is a bad album.”

The wonderful thing about the album is that it gives a glimpse into the life of the artists. This isn’t a punk rock album produced with the sole intent of causing a ruckus and pissing your parents off. As Skiba told SPIN Magazine:

“I went through a lot since the last record and this one, like going straight out of a gnarly divorce into a really great, beautiful relationship that came to an end just as we started writing My Shame Is True,” he told SPIN. “I just wrote this one more as like a love letter to my ex-girlfriend or an apology note set to music.”

88.1 The ‘Burg wants you to decide whether Alkaline Trio’s new stuff is good or not. That’s why we’re giving away multiple tickets to their show at Showbox at the Market on June 7. If you can’t attend that show the trio will be performing at Hawthorne Theater in Portland, June 8. Be sure and checkout our Facebook and ‘Burg app for details on how you can win!
