Here at 88.1 The ‘Burg, we take great pride in supporting up-and-coming artists. Rapid advancements in digital audio technology have provided underground artists with the tools to record, produce, and master high quality material at a relatively low cost. Modern communications technology also provides opportunities for artists to promote and distribute their work without a record label. Today’s music industry has been radically transformed by these advancements in technology. Many differing opinions exist as to whether these changes are good or bad; however, the bottom line is simple, good music can be created and distributed by talented and creative musicians without third party record labels and distributors. Our music and programming departments recognize this bottom line and embrace it. We also recognize some of the downfalls of the relative ease of distribution and promotion of music that today’s technology provides. Some of these downfalls can be remedied with a combination of applied knowledge, creativity, and good old fashion hard work. Here are some dos and don’ts to consider before submitting music to 88.1 The ‘Burg.

DO your homework… Look at our programming schedule to determine if your genre of music fits our type of programming.

DON’T submit profane material… If your music contains profane or obscene lyrical content, we will reject it immediately. If your music does contain profane or obscene lyrical content, consider cutting a “FCC clean” edit of the song before submitting.

DO send us physical CDs… We receive literally hundreds of digital music submissions per week. Our energetic yet humble music department gives priority to physical submissions.

DON’T tell us your life story… We appreciate a creative presentation of material; however, your music will speak for itself. A short bio and description of your music is sufficient. Links to further media material will be followed if we like your music.

DO consider having your music professionally mastered… Although today’s Digital Audio Workstations are extremely powerful and relatively inexpensive, an experienced mastering engineer in a professional studio will almost always be able to put that little bit extra on your tracks. On the plus side, professional mastering services are now offered online for low cost.

DON’T get discouraged… If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. This doesn’t mean send us the same material over and over again; rather, it’s an encouragement to continue developing your craft. You’re initial submissions may not make the cut but later ones might be more successful.

Also if you can swing it, submit your music in a jewel case. It makes putting your awesome new music in our library easier.
