With Sasquatch 2014 now at our heels, it’s time to focus on the next big festival…no not Summer Jam, we’re talking Paradiso. This year’s line-up has had some mixed reviews. Hardcore EDM fans claim the headliners are a bit of a sellout.  Krewella and Zedd are immensely popular, not only with those who listen to nothing but EDM, but your average music lover as well. Hits like “Clarity” and “Alive” are recognizable to most college students. While some of the hipsters gripe about the blurred lines between true EDM and your average Top 40 song, the fact is that rave culture isn’t a secret organization any more. Yes, there will be seasoned ravers attending Paradiso, but a lot of people there will be music fans who are simply looking for somewhat recognizable tunes they can party to. The Paradiso line-up has catered to their crowd and we commend them for that.

The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers

Of course headliners Bassnectar, Above & Beyond, Zedd and Krewella will draw crowds but the bill is set to stun with a list of over 50 featured acts. As usual, there are a handful of smaller acts that are definitely worth checking out whether at Paradiso or Soundcloud.

If you think you haven’t heard of The Chainsmokers you’re wrong.  Equally annoying as it is catchy, “#SELFIE” was The Chainsmokers first mainstream exposure but even if you can’t stand “#SELFIE,” it’s worth digging deeper into their music. The progressive house DJ Duo of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are handsome, put on a crazy live show and of course have great senses of humor. Yet to release a full album, The Chainsmokers most recent studio release other than “#SELFIE” is the single “The Rookie” which dropped in January of last year. Like any EDM artist, an updated list of The Chainsmokers stuff can be found on Soundcloud.

Late Night Alumni

Late Night Alumni

In a male dominated genre, it’s nice to see some females on the bill. One of these includes Late Night Alumni, comprised of Becky jean Williams, Finn Bjarnson, John Hancock and Ryan Raddon (Kaskade). The group mixes electronica with indie rock elements to create a unique chill out sound. The latest album from the group, The Beat Becomes a Sound dropped in January of last year. The album features songs like “My Awake,” and “Ring A Bell.” In an interview with LessThan3, the band was asked what they wanted the overall theme or message of the album to be. John responded:

“We considered making this new album more ‘thumpy’ or in another style. However, we struggled with that because we naturally come to the table with very different-sounding tracks. What really ties everything together is Becky’s voice. Having an acoustic guitar playing with Becky singing over it, that’s Late Night Alumni. Sounds like that let us experiment with live orchestras and similar “unorthodox” ideas knowing that Becky’s voice will bring it together.”

Cookie Monsta

Cookie Monsta

Dubstep fans may want to take note of Cookie Monsta. The UK native, formerly known as Tony Cook, is proud to play the dirty side of dubstep. Cookie Monsta fell in love playing with his brother’s Playstation making sounds on Music 2000. Always attracted to the dirtier side of music, Cookie Monsta is your go-to guy for downright nasty dubstep. Cookie Monsta and Funtcase co-produced Circus Two in May of 2013. More recently, Cookie Monsta’s “Time to Party” single is available for pre-order on iTunes and lists June 16 las the release date.

The ‘Burg is giving away two pairs of Paradiso tickets this Friday (6/6) between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. The ‘Burg’s own DJ Hookshot, Kiefer and Dekka will be performing on the SURC West Patio along with DJ Sneaks.
