Shows of Note – Resolution Locals

DJ-Beauflexx-KusH.-

With the EDM music genre growing at alarming rates, both in number of producers/DJs and fans, it’s easy to get lost in a crowd and can be hard to break into the business as an aspiring EDM musician. That’s why we appreciate the fact that USC Events features local artists in many of their lineups. Washingtonian Beauflexx, will be at Resolution 2014 this year and we’re stoked about it.

Beauflexx

Beauflexx

Originally from Seattle, Beauflexx is now a Spokane resident and started playing shows at the age of 17. Specializing in moombahton, dubstep and trap, the DJ draws inspiration from Diplo, Bro Safari and Borgore. His music described as “eargasmic bass,” Beauflexx also pulls from his 80’s childhood and the break beats, hip hop and funk that came from that era.

Now a seasoned DJ with over a decade of live performances in the northwest, Beauflexx has earned awards in Spokane as best DJ for multiple years. Beauflexx has worked alongside USC Events on multiple projects but is usually found at The Knitting Factory in Spokane.

If you’re planning on attending Resolution this year, be sure to take note of the local talent. Win tickets by entering into our live on-air drawing on December 20. Check out our blog and Facebook events page for details on how to win tickets to the biggest New Year’s Party in Washington state.

Tayler Shaindlin

Tayler Shaindlin

Tayler Shaindlin fits right at home here at 88.1 The ‘Burg. Shes a girl with that special something. Always a happy face, shining eyes and a “lets do this” attitude we couldn’t be more pleased she was selected by her piers as November DJ of the month. A frequent volunteer at events with three shows of her own, Shaindlin is quite the busy body. Shouting at events ’til she has no voice, last minute appearances on the radio and twerking as ‘Burgfoot are no longer foreign to the college radio all-star.

Shaindlin started volunteering last January after attending a freshmen orientation session all about The ‘Burg. Looking for something new and cool to try, Shaindlin’s curiosity would turn her into one of the most-valued volunteers at the station. Shaindlin’s hard work really paid off this November because she was hired into a paid position as Reporter for the station. You can catch her edition of News Central, Fridays between noon and 1 p.m.

Quite diverse in her efforts, Shaindlin has hosted a hip-hop and indie rock show and will be co-hosting a Thursday/Friday morning show with DJ Dirty Snowball from 6 to 8 a.m. Congratulations to November DJ of the Month Tayler Shaindlin!

Shows of Note – Our Resolution

8386345399_0aeb952d2d_b

Some people want to lose weight, some people want to break a bad habit and others just want to get plurnt. USC Events is making the latter resolution easy with Resolution 2014.  A lineup of over 15 artists, the EDM extravaganza looks to continue its tradition of being the biggest party in Washington state this New Year’s.

Everyone is obviously stoked for headliners Knife Party and Above & Beyond, but there are a few other artists on the playbill The ‘Burg is particularly excited about.

Figure

Figure

Figure is the poster child for making your way through the ranks of EDM. Making a name for himself in the American dream fashion, Figure, aka Josh Gard, is originally from a small town in Indiana and has gradually gone from traditional DJ techniques of scratching vinyl to dubstep production.  When asked in an interview with SimplyGigantic.com if he thinks DJs make better producers he had to admit that if you do one it will help with the other, and we agree.

Lazy Rich

Lazy Rich

Electrohouse DJ, Lazy Rich (Richard Billis), is a Canadian import who has caught our attention. Influenced by Wolfgang Gartner, Deadmau5 and Zero 7, the man claims to have a hankering for evil sounding music as opposed to the bright and fluffy.  His career on the rise, Lazy Rich has worked with Deadmau5, Lady GaGa, Fatboy Slim and many more on remixes and other projects. Lazy Rich isn’t stopping anytime soon and we’re glad he isn’t.

NERVO

NERVO

It isn’t common to see female producers in the EDM scene. It’s even less common to see twins. NERVO is truly a breath of fresh air. Talented, sexy and blonde, they may just be on their way to becoming EDM icons. Originally songwriters for stars like Ke$ha and the Pussycat Dolls, twins Mim and Liv co-wrote “When Love Takes Over” by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. The Australian born NERVO twins are now COVERGIRLS and have had quite the year in 2013. It will be hard to top their success in 2014 but Resolution will be a great way to start trying.

The ‘Burg is giving away multiple pairs of tickets to Resolution 2014. Listen between 10 and midnight tomorrow (12/6) for a shot at winning. Check out our Resolution Ticket Giveaway Blog and Facebook event for details on how you can be entered into a Resolution ticket drawing.

Shows of Note – The Moment is Now

In This Moment

Metal is a genre of music with a bias towards a certain gender. Not that metal music is degrading to women or makes efforts to exclude them from the culture; it is just a fact that in general, men are the ones who prefer metal music, not women. In fact, it’s a common misconception that metal music is sexist. A lot of the earlier metal, especially in the late 80’s, was designed to trivialize sex and women, but now the issue isn’t the norm in metal. Many metal bands, especially of the Black, Grind and Doom metal genres avoid the topic of sex completely. All that aside, we love that melodic metalcore band In This Moment is led by a female vocalist.

In+This+Moment++2011

In This Moment

In This Moment got their start in the mid 2000’s releasing their first album, Beautiful Tragedy with two albums in between its most recent album Blood which dropped in 2012. Lead vocalist Maria Brink and co-founding member, lead guitarist Chris Howorth met by chance and went on to recruit Jeff Fabb on drums, Blake Bunzell on guitarist and eventually bassist Jesse Landry. Growing from a cult favorite to a MySpace phenomenon, the band landed a record deal in late 2005 with Century Media Records.

In This Moment will be playing at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland on January 1, Showbox at the Market in Seattle on January 3 and The Knitting Factory in Spokane on January 4. Tune-in tonight (12/4) between 8 and 10 p.m. for a chance to win tickets to the Seattle show!

Shows of Note – Reely Reely Cool

n160684890284_6530976_3098651

Truly legends in not only the specialty genre of ska but the whole rock band population, Reel Big Fish is a band that has proven ska music can have a wide appeal.

Reel Big Fish

Reel Big Fish

RBF formed in 1992, a year in which many of the students at CWU were born. The band has continued to produce solid punk rock tunes, with over ten studio produced albums. The band also has greatest hits, live and acoustic albums along with a few EPs to their name. With that arsenal of music in their back pocket RBF is known to put on one of the best rock shows around with over 250 show dates a year to their thousands of almost cult-like fans.

Candy Coated Fury is RBF’s most recent accomplishment, released in July of 2012. In the spirit of ska, many of RBF’s song take a less serious tone. Candy Coated Fury includes classics such as “Your Girlfriend Sucks,” “I Know You Too Well To Like You Anymore” and “Everyone Else Is An A*****e.”

The band is old, but has been through a through a lot of change with only one founding member, lead singer Aaron Barrett left. In an interview with freelance journalist Marcus Beard, Barrett had this to say:

“I feel like I used to be a lot more clever and funny. I’m old,” he laments while his eyes wander around the room. “Monkeys for Nothing was leftover bullshit.”

Not too serious but at times too dark for mom, Reel Big Fish has continued to attract a throng of faithful supporters. The band will be performing in the northwest at Hawthorne Theatre in Portland on January 10, Showbox at the Market in Seattle on January 11 and The Knitting Factory in Spokane on January 13. Tune-in to The ‘Burg tonight (12/3) between 3 and 6 p.m. for a chance to win tickets to the Seattle show.
